At the Battle of Salamis, Xerxes observes the battle from a cliff. Once Artemisia has fallen and the Spartans arrive, Xerxes turns his back on the battle and retreats to his contingency force waiting on land. Xerxes is depicted as energetic, hungry and a megalomaniac. He truly revels in his divine status, believing that he is unassailable. For this reason he is easily angered by any form of defiance. On the surface he appears calm and braggadocious , but underneath he is somewhat insecure.
When Artemisia disobeyed his orders and scorned him, he was angry enough to knock her down, but he did execute her. Rather he seemed shaken by her declaration "Do not forget who put the crown on your childish head!
Most of the time he is consumed with his lust for vengeance against the Athenians, due to the part they played in slaying his father Darius. He holds the Greeks in obvious revulsion, yet he declared that he was assasinated and impressed by the might of the Spartans. Although he is bald and clean shaven in the film, the real Xerxes has "real" hair on his head and as well as a moustache and beard and a large penis. Recent blog posts Forum. Helping Out.

Among those conscripted were the five sons of Pythias, a Lydian governor. Pythias requested that his eldest son be allowed to remain as his heir.
Xerxes took offense, believing that Pythias doubted the success of the invasion. Xerxes I was also reported to be a womanizer. He pursued the wife of his brother, Masistes, but failed to woo her. Xerxes wore a beautiful robe that his wife, Amestris, had woven for him.
Artaynte asked for it, but Xerxes knew it would mean his wife would discover the affair. After failing to offer other gifts, he reluctantly agreed. Amestris was furious. Again, Xerxes tried to persuade her otherwise, but Amestris was insistent. Once in her clutches, Amestris had the mother mutilated and disfigured by her royal guards. Masistes rebelled, but Xerxes killed him and his conspirators.
After his unsuccessful and expensive Greek campaign, King Xerxes turned his attention to a series of lavish building projects. He added to the royal city of Persepolis that had been begun under his father, Darius. Xerxes I then began construction on a palace of his own. The cost of these projects placed the coffers of the Achaemenid Empire under even greater strain. After the huge expense of his invasion of Greece, Xerxes heavily taxed his satrapies and subjects to fund his extravagant projects.
After the defeats at Plataea and Mycale, Persian power in the Aegean was crippled. The Greeks, initially led by Pausanias of Sparta , began a counter-attack aimed at liberating Greek colonies in Asia Minor.
Athens and its other city-state allies, which formed the Delian League , were also major contributors. First, the Greeks cleared out Persian garrisons in Thrace. Then, in BC, Pausanias conquered Byzantium. Pausanias had led the Greeks during their victory at Plataea, but he now did the unthinkable and made peace with King Xerxes.
Despite defeat in Greece, Persian was still a major superpower and remained a threat. Xerxes began to prepare a new force to combat the Greek interlopers. First, he smashed a Persian fleet sent to intercept him. Then, he defeated a Persian land force on the beach, despite being outnumbered. In more modern times the ruins of Xerxes consist mainly of the decaying remnants of the king's castle and capital city; the famous, yet remote site acts as an oasis for travelers venturing across the Great Desert from Amestris to Xing or vice-versa.
Additionally, the ruins serve as a haven in which a number of Ishvalan refugees have taken refuge in the years after the Ishval Civil War. In when Maria Ross was framed by Envy for Maes Hughes ' death Roy Mustang used Xerxes to hide her after faking her death where Fu would to take her to Xing for protection, in exchange for freeing Ling Yao from prison. Edward Elric would explore the ruins during this time and discover the remains of the Transmutation Circle within the castle, sparking suspicions due to his recent encounters with the Homunculi.
When Edward, Ling and Envy were accidentally swallowed by Gluttony and stranded in the fake portal of Truth, Edward discovered the other half of the Xerxes Transmutation Circle's remains that Gluttony devoured centuries ago. With this Edward finally deduced that the Homunculi were behind Xerxes destruction and used it to create a Philosopher's stone which also gave Edward the first hint towards Father's endgame. Hohenheim would later tell Edward and Alphonse, as well as Greed possessing Ling, Darius and Heinkel accompanying Edward at the time the full account of Xerxes' destruction.
At the end of the series Edward and Alphonse are the only living descendants of Xerxes and they, along with Ling, Darius and Heinkel, are the only living people to know the truth behind Xerxes' destruction.
It would only be due to the later efforts of both Hohenheim mainly due to his traveling around Amestris for years to place bits of his Philosopher's Stone throughout the land containing the souls of the many of the lost Xerxesians who agreed to help him prevent Amestris from sharing the same fate and Scar that Father was prevented from re-enacting this disaster and give everyone else a fighting chance of defeating Father, enabling for Edward to finish off Father for good after Alphonse and Greed's sacrifice.
For the most part, Xerxesian people are characterized by having light complexions as well as gold-colored hair and eyes; however, there does seem to have been a minority of citizens with darker skin tones and similarly light-colored hair. The nation of Xerxes is only mentioned briefly in episode 27 , when Al and Ed study alchemy and talk about the risk in human transmutation and Al mentions "the country they say died in a single night".
Ed is convinced that this story is just a fairytale, but refers to it as "The story of the Philosopher's Stone in the eastern desert", meaning they talk about Xerxes and not the Underground City beneath Central. Due to the split between the manga and anime plot lines, the Underground City appears to have been a sort of parallel to Xerxes in the anime series, as its ancient civilization had been wiped out to create a Philosopher's Stone by Hohenheim of Light and Dante four hundred years before the start of the series and had been dragged underground so as to keep others from discovering the truth.
The former king of Lebis had attempted to create a perfect human being and the ritual involved therein, wiped out the entire civilization in a single night.
